The Budget - not the one by the chancellor - your household budget. Get some paper (or a spreadsheet if you're clever) and make a budget plan. By writing the numbers down you'll see what you're planning on spending, and of course you should write down what you actually spend - when theres a difference you'll be able to look and see why - and make cut backs.

At the supermarket - Get vouchers for money off your shopping - save money by applying for those coupons - and cutting coupons out of the papers and magazines. Take them with you! Get organised - an envelope on a pin board might help you organise yourself better so you collect the coupons and take them. Make a shopping list.

When you do go to the supermarket - take your vouchers with you and a calculator and your shopping list. Stick to the list but watch out for potential savings on 3 for 2s on items etc - but don't buy stuff you don't use.
Look out for the supermarket brands - and the value lines. For lots of items there is very little difference in content, its just cheaper packaging.

Keep an eye out for bargains and cheaper versions of what you like. Eye level shelves are usually most popular/expensive items so Look up and down!

Check the sell by dates on food - and watch out for stuff you can't freeze.

Bring the shopping home!
Put it away - moving older items to the front of cupboards so stuff doesn't go out of date - watch out for the sell by dates and if you need to - write a list of when you're having what so you don't miss something.

Cook more food and freeze leftovers in portions - for easy and cheap meals later in the week. Add them to your list of meals!

Buying clothes - look out for cheaper shops, vouchers for money off clothes - see clothing freebies for money off vouchers and special discounts

Dig out old clothes and perhaps set them aside for a car boot sale.

Scour charity shops in posh areas for nice designer label clothes.


Saving on your bills - see cut bills site for ways of saving money on telephone, gas and electricity.
Don't put hot food straight into the fridge - allow it to cool. This saves the fridge straining to stay at the right temperature.
Put the right amount of water in the kettle.

Keep the freezer full - it saves money. Don't stand with the door open for ages either.

Turn off lights in empty rooms, and draw the curtains to keep heat in.

You will need

• a table - wallpaper pasting table will do
• stuff to sell - clear your clutter and clothes you don't wear anymore.
• plastic bags for people to take away their bargains
• some change
• a calculator if you're not good at adding up.
• newspaper to wrap anything delicate.
• a good eye - price stuff up right. Perhaps offers like "4 for a pound" will help

Either get a new job or find part time work.
